It’s an austere stone restaurant with tiny windows that look to the mountains, a well-groomed little garden. Opposite stands an old stone church with a bell that tolls the hours, a small square with a water spring, a couple of donkeys in a paddock. Simple service, everything you want and need, nothing more, nothing less. You’ll leave feeling you’ve truly been fed, not just that you’ve dined out.

Getting here

Etxebarri is in Atxondo, between San Sebastian (about an hour’s drive away) and Bilbao, (45 minutes), but it has to be one of the hardest restaurants in Europe to find. Spend the morning at the Guggenheim in Bilbao then hire a car with GPS. You’ll get lost en route, so use the GPS co-ordinates from the website. It’s in a village that keeps throwing up distractions like quarries and blind turns. If you’re driving, the directions on the website look fine but, did we say, take a GPS? As the Avis rep tells us, go through the ‘points of interest’ index on the GPS to Atxondo or even it may struggle.
